An official accreditation according to inter-national reference standards such as ISO 17025 and ISO 15189 is an objective illustration of the quality awareness of a laboratory.
Quality has to be assured for each individual sample that is being analysed. Therefore, a great deal of analyst time has to be dedicated to met-hod validation. Blank levels, QC recoveries and internal standards recoveries have to determined and monitored in great detail, such that appro-priate measures can be taken once a (potential) calamity occurs. These controls, validations and subsequent re-validations too often have a great impact on sample throughput, efficiency and analyst workload. All these factors make practical organisation and maintenance of a laboratory quality system extremely challenging.
